Bluebirds Tribute

2008 March 01

For the first time in many, many years, I went to a City game today at Ninian Park. Cardiff v Leicester City. Carolyn, my husband Peter and our son Ben went along in memory of John whose funeral we had held only the day before. We knew he would have wanted to be there, so we went in his place and in his memory. John's mates had organised a tribute for him, his photo on the big screen at half time. And what a fitting image it was, John doing the Ayatollah on the Great Wall of China of all places! Taken only 2 months earlier - who would have thought.... The press office at the City were outstanding. Carolyn and I were plucked from the crowd by the Press Officer, introduced to the announcer who took a few details about John and then escorted to the Press Box until half time. We were then taken across the pitch to the Bob Bank where we laid a floral tribute, just as John's photo came up, to applause from the 13,000 strong crowd, elicited by the announcer. Wish I could say the players rose to the occasion too, but they were dismal. Must have been in mourning....
